Dan Sitarz is an attorney, author, lecturer, educator, and business entrepreneur. In 1992, in cooperation with the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, he wrote and edited the popular abridged version of the central agreement of the Earth Summit: Agenda 21: The Earth Summit Strategy to Save our Planet (published by Earth Press). This book was selected as one of the top 25 Environmental Reference Books by the Sierra Club (Sierra Club Green Guide) and one of the top 21 Books for the 21st Century, jointly by the International Center for Environment and Public Policy of the California Institute of Public Affairs, The Commission on Environmental Strategy and Planning of the World Conservation Union (ICUN), and the World Future Society (Future Survey).
In cooperation with the President’s Council on Sustainable Development, in 1997, Dan wrote and abridged the Council’s voluminous reports into a concise book for the general public: Sustainable America: America’s Environment, Economy, and Society in the 21st Century; [with a foreword by then-Vice President Al Gore](published by Earth Press). This book was honored as one of the top three environmental books of 1997 by the World Future Society (Future Survey).
From 1999 through 2008, Dan taught and lectured widely as guest lecturer on sustainability and environmental issues for the Environmental Studies Program and the Environmental Resources and Policy PhD Program at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. He also served as project advisor for the first detailed sustainability assessment of the University in 2000 and was instrumental in the University’s signing of the Talloires Declaration on Sustainability in Higher Education. He was one of the initial founders and a director of Southern Sustainability (now the Southern Illinois Center for a Sustainable Future), and he has assisted numerous organizations and businesses seeking to further sustainability goals, including the Land for Learning Institute, the Center for Neo-Tropical Conservation, The Community Conservation Botanical Garden, and many others. He has also advised many entrepreneurs and small business owners on green business and sustainability issues.
In 2008, Mr. Sitarz authored the book: Greening Your Business: The Hands-On Guide to Creating a Successful and Sustainable Business. This book has been selected as the Best Business Reference Book of 2008 by the National Best Books Awards; was finalist for the Best Environmental Book of 2008 in the Book of the Year Awards from Foreword Magazine; and was seleced as the Best Business Book for 2009, at the Green Book Festival in April 2009.
Additionally, in the 1980s, Dan founded Nova Publishing, which has become one of the premier providers of simplified legal information in America. Its books, software, and legal products are in all major bookstores, and Staples, Office Depot, and OfficeMax office supply superstores. Nova also provides content for several major online legal service providers, notably FindLegalForms.com and LawGuru.com. He has written over 30 business and legal books, all designed to assist entrepreneurs and the general public in navigating the complexities of business and legal issues. His business and legal books have been praised by the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, CNN, and many others.
Dan is also director of the newly formed Center for Sustainable Business and Technology, a non-profit created to foster education and information about sustainable business practices and sustainable technology.
In 2009, Dan assisted FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a non-profit organization founded by Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway Human Transporter. The FIRST program is designed to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. Working with the FIRST Robotics teams, Mr. Sitarz developed a business energy audit program that will eventually allow thousands of high school teams to perform business energy audits in their home communities around the U.S., as a fund-raising tool, a community service, and a educational tool for teaching energy management.
Finally, Dan has been involved with the Partnerships for Sustainability (PFS) project which provides Southeastern Wisconsin’s businesses with the practical steps that help improve sustainable business practices. The SEAT (Sustainable Enterprise Assessment Tool™) tool provides businesses with sustainable business strategies for more efficient operations, better go-to-market strategies and improved risk management. PFS has adapted these strategies from the . The project's Sustainability Advisory Team includes representatives from Quad/Graphics, Kohl’s Department Stores, American Transmission Company, Johnson Controls, RA Smith National, Engberg Anderson, MSI General, Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren, Karl James & Company Public Relations and Johnson Diversey. Partnerships for Sustainability is currently developing a software and internet-based business assessment tool which will also use sustainable business techniques and tools that were developed by Mr. Sitarz.
